Many novels and stories by Tolstoy have been translated in recent years to great acclaim. Pevear and Volokhonsky tend towards what I imagine to be a more literal interpretation, complete with stylistic repetitions and even, where appropriate, nineteenth-century usages. While previous versions have softened the robust, and sometimes shocking, quality of Tolstoy's writing, Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky have produced a translation true to his powerful voice. The galling thing is that Tolstoy does this on purpose. As “The Lady with the Lap Dog” because the first twenty or so times I read it, the title was translated that way. Constance Garnett and Pevear/Volokhonsky translated Anna Karenina in vastly different ways, but when people read each version, they still had much the same reaction to the various elements.
